由於我看的是英文字幕，一些地方不太明白，就在imdb上問了些問題，沒想到過了一段時間居然有不少老外回應，我的問題和回應如下：
－－This movie is great.As a non-speaking English foreigner,I can
understand the whole meaning of the film.But as to some details,I have
some questions. I wonder why this movie called"the squid and the whale"
and what's the meaning of the scene that Chicken went to the museum to
see the squid and the whale. I've heard the song "Hey You"by Pink
Floid,but as a literature teacher who likes movies and culture Bernard
would know this popular song which has a great impact on the society.He
would notice it wasn't his son who made it. so I wanna ask people who
have seen this film to tell me or explain something about what I don't
know.

－－I think the subplot of "the squid and the whale" was explained once when Chicken met the shrink recalling a psycholocial fear took place in his early childhood.

－－i cannot remember the exact title, but there was a time/life book back in the 60s, that showed animals of the sea, of the deep sea. there was a well known picture of a giant squid attacking (possibly) a blue whale (i say this because it was a HUGE whale). walt was at the psychiatrist's office and mentioned the whole thing about hanging out with his mom, she being his best friend, they being pals back then, and then the mention of looking at the scary fish at the natural history museum (as i recall, the museum of natural history in NYC, the main or central hall, had a facsimile of a gigantic whale hanging from the ceiling, and his characters mention of not being able to look at the squid and the whale, "i was always afraid of the squid and the whale fighting, i could only look at it with my hands in front of my face", probably alluding to his parents always fighting.

－－YEs, I think that as a metaphor, squid and whale refer to the parents

－－this makes sense to me now. except i don't think Walt was afraid of seeing his parents fight, i think he only saw his parent's relationship from his father's point of view. it was not until Walt "uncovered his eyes" and saw things from his mother's point of view that he was able to see the relationship for what it really was. To the father, everything was a competition, he had an hidden agenda to everything he said and did. Walt began to understand his mother's love was unconditional. she was not trying to "win" her children's love or be better than Bernard.

i recall this picture from my youth
as my parents bought endless Nat. Geographic
and Time/life books for me and my brothers.

i found this graphic which is similar to the
picture i recall as a child, but it's not as
i remembered it (exactly); although time does
pretty big damage to the memory...

but if anyone wants to see where the theme
of the movie comes from (graphically) check
out this picture. also, if you do a google
image search for 'squid, whale' it will bring up
some similar images.

i have been waiting for this flick to be
available on NetFlix and am supposed to get it
today; Fayetteville arkansas, needless to say,
didn't show this film as it was not a mass-release.
but i can't wait to see it.

－－the last scene in the movie shows walt going into the museum and he sees the model of a SPERM whale being attacked by a giant squid. it's on the placard.

－－"Hey You" was minor Pink Floyd. Not to be taken seriously.

Bernard doesn't like movies and culture, Bernard likes nothing but the sound of his own voice.

－－It's obviously a metaphor for Squids, Whales and hands covering faces to avoid the fighting (During his "breakthrough" with the shrink. I also think everyone is missing the double meaning. Walt tends to prematurely blow his load like a whale during his time of confusion and younger Frank uses his semen to cover lockers & books, like a squid.
