"Oscar materials......"
This is basically a remake of "English Patient", with a different story line, and a different, far less engaging mate for poor poor 洛夫.
In fact, not even as good as "English Patient"---which I dislikeed anyway, because there at least the author makes certain allowance for the complexities of the world and we have some sort of a faded recognition of moral ambiguities. Nothing like that here. We are invited to embrace and embolden ourselves with the self-righteous, red-hot passion against corporate exploitation and their immoral financial conspiracy. Le Carre at his most cranky as a conspiracy theretician.
Rachel Weitz's character is annoying as hell. That's the kind of people who mistake bluntness for integrity, and forgive themselves of many sins based on the shaky ground of their own moral superiority. Throughout history, such people have proven to be useless to the betterment of homo sapiens. Maybe Meryl Streep would have been able to inject more dignity into this character, but apparently the director has higher regards for brainless sexual appeal than for skill and understanding. After all, Oscar materials are not for "high-brows", eh?
