錯過卓別林

過去對於卓別林的認識僅限於那個滑稽的流浪漢，覺得他是個幽默的人道主義者，用微笑擦去窮人臉上的淚水。今天看了《大獨裁者》，才明白，他是一個真正的理想主義者，一個締造美好未來的藝術家，一個偉大的造夢者！

下面這一段是他在影片結尾的演說。
不管民主、自由是對是錯，他演說中的真誠已經完全打動了我。

為自由而戰鬥（《大獨裁者》結尾演講詞）
遺憾得很，我並不想當皇帝，那不是我乾的行當。我既不想統治任何人，也不想征服任何人。
如果可能的話，我倒挺想幫助所有的人，不論是猶太人還是非猶太人，是黑種人還是白種人。

我們都要互相幫助。
做人就是應當如此。
我們要把生活建築在別人的幸福上，而不是建築在別人的痛苦上。
我們不要彼此仇恨，互相鄙視。
這個世界上有足夠的地方讓所有的人生活。
大地是富饒的，是可以使每一個人都豐衣足食的。

生活的道路可以是自由的，美麗的，只可惜我們迷失了方向。
貪婪毒化了人的靈魂，在全世界築起仇恨的壁壘，強迫我們踏著正步走向苦難，進行屠殺。
我們發展了速度，但是我們隔離了自己。
機器是應當創造財富的，但它們反而給我們帶來了窮困。
我們有了知識，反而看破一切；我們學得聰明乖巧了，反而變得冷酷無情了。
我們頭腦用得太多了，感情用得太少了。
我們更需要的不是機器，而是人性。
我們更需要的不是聰明乖巧，而是仁慈溫情。
缺少了這些東西，人生就會變得凶暴，一切也都完了。

飛機和無線電縮短了我們之間的距離。
這些東西的性質，本身就是為了發揮人類的優良品質；要求全世界的人彼此友愛，要求我們大家互相團結。
現在的世界上就有千百萬人彼此友愛，要求我們大家互相團結。
現在的世界上就有千百萬人聽到我的聲音——千百萬失望的男人、女人、小孩——他們都是一個制度下的受害者，這個制度使人們受盡折磨，把無辜者投入監獄。
我要向那些聽得見我講話的人說：「不要絕望呀。」
我們現在受到苦難，這只是因為那些害怕人類進步的人在即將消逝之前發洩他們的怨毒，滿足他們的貪婪。
這些人的仇恨會消逝的，獨裁者會死亡的，他們從人民那裡奪去的權力會重新回到人民手中的。
只要我們不怕死，自由是永遠不會消失的。

戰士們！
你們別為那些野獸去賣命呀——他們鄙視你們——奴役你們——他們統治你們——吩咐你們應該做什麼——應當想什麼，應該懷抱什麼樣的感情！
他們強迫你們去操練，限定你們的伙食——把你們當牲口，用你們當炮灰。
你們別去受這些喪失了理性的人擺佈了——他們都是一夥機器人，長的是機器人的腦袋，有的是機器人的心肝！
可是你們不是機器！
你們是人！
你們心裡有著人類的愛！
不要仇恨呀！
只有那些得不到愛護的人才仇恨——那些得不到愛護和喪失了理性的人才仇恨！

戰士們！
不要為奴役而戰鬥！
要為自由而戰鬥！
《路加福音》第十七章里寫著，神的國就在人的心裡——不是在一個人或者一群人的心裡，而是在所有人的心裡！
在你們的心裡！
你們人民有力量——有創造機器的力量。
有創造幸福的力量！
你們人民有力量建立起自己美好的生活——使生活富有意義。
那麼——為了民主 ——就讓我們進行戰鬥，建設一個新的世界——一個美好的世界，它將使每一個人都有工作的機會——它將使青年人都有光明的前途，老年人都過安定的生活。

那些野獸也就是用這些諾言竊取了權力。
但是，他們是說謊！
他們從來不去履行他們的諾言。
他們永遠不會履行他們的諾言！
獨裁者自己享有自由，但是他們使人民淪為奴隸。
現在，就讓我們進行鬥爭，為了解放全世界，為了消除國家的壁壘，為了消除貪婪、仇恨、頑固。
讓我們進行鬥爭，為了建立一個理智的世界——在那個世界上，科學與進步將使我們所有人獲得幸福。
戰士們，為了民主，讓我們團結在一起！

哈娜，你聽見我在說什麼嗎？
不管這會兒在哪裡，你抬起頭來看看呀！
抬起頭來看呀，哈娜！
烏雲正在消散！陽光照射出來！
我們正在離開黑暗，進入光明！

Fight For Liberty（The Final Speech of 「the Great Dictator」）
"I'm sorry, but I don't want to be an emperor.
That's not my business.
I don't want to rule or conquer anyone.
I should like to help everyone if possible - Jew, Gentile - black man - white.

We all want to help one another.
Human beings are like that.
We want to live by each other's happiness - not by each other's misery.
We don't want to hate and despise one another.
In this world there's room for everyone and the good earth is rich and can provide for everyone.
The way of life can be free and beautiful, but we have lost the way.
Greed has poisoned men's souls - has barricaded the world with hate - has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed.
We have developed speed, but we have shut ourselves in.
Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want.
Our knowledge has made us cynical; our cleverness, hard and unkind.
We think too much and feel too little.
More than machinery we need humanity.
More than cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness.
Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost.

The aeroplane and the radio have brought us closer together.
The very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness in man - cries for universal brotherhood - for the unity of us all.
Even now my voice is reaching millions throughout the world - millions of despairing men, women, and little children - victims of a system that makes men torture and imprison innocent people.
To those who can hear me, I say: 'Do not despair.'
The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed - the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress.
The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people.
And so long as men die, liberty will never perish.

Soldiers!
Don't give yourselves to brutes - men who despise you and enslave you - who regiment your lives - tell you what to do - what to think and what to feel!
Who drill you - diet you - treat you like cattle, use you as cannon fodder.
Don't give yourselves to these unnatural men - machine men with machine minds and machine hearts!
You are not machines!
You are not cattle!
You are men!
You have the love of humanity in your hearts.
You don't hate, only the unloved hate - the unloved and the unnatural!

Soldiers!
Don't fight for slavery!
Fight for liberty!
In the seventeenth chapter of St Luke, it is written the kingdom of God is within man not one man nor a group of men, but in all men!
In you! You, the people, have the power - the power to create machines.
The power to create happiness!
You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful - to make this life a wonderful adventure.
Then in the name of democracy - let us use that power - let us all unite. Let us fight for a new world - a decent world that will give men a chance to work - that will give youth a future and old age a security.

By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power.
But they lie!
They do not fulfil that promise.
They never will!
Dictators free themselves but they enslave the people.
Now let us fight to fulfil that promise!
Let us fight to free the world - to do away with national barriers - to do away with greed, with hate and intolerance.
Let us fight for a world of reason - a world where science and progress will lead to all men's happiness.
Soldiers, in the name of democracy, let us unite!

Hannah, can you hear me?
Wherever you are, look up Hannah.
The clouds are lifting!
The sun is breaking through!
We are coming out of the darkness into the light.
We are coming into a new world - a kindlier world, where men will rise above their hate, their greed and their brutality.
Look up, Hannah!
The soul of man has been given wings and at last he is beginning to fly.
He is flying into the rainbow - into the light of hope, into the future, the glorious future that belongs to you, to me, and to all of us.
Look up, Hannah... look up!"
