一部安靜,殘忍的影片.
它幾乎是Emma的獨角戲,從牙牙學語的孩童,到雷厲風行的大學教授,到形同槁木的病患,以及最後病床上靜止了的生命.
毫無懸念,由生至死,毋庸置疑的理所當然,而又不會讓人覺得無趣.全憑演技、獨白與情感支撐起一部經典.
Vivian Bearing, 哲學博士,大學教授,主攻John Donne,苛刻嚴厲,說一不二,突然得知患有罕見卵巢癌. 片頭Vivian與Dr. Kelekian的對話,Vivian的堅忍可見一斑,8個月實驗性強度治療不是兒戲,而是生命.
治療期間,Vivian獨處的時間裡,安靜到無法意識到時間的流動,時間過得那麼緩慢,而又稀薄可見.回憶過往,Vivian再次認識了自己的生命.
E.M. Ashford 是Vivian的文學導師, 在她的回憶中,首次出現了John Donne的這首詩: 「

Death be not proud

DEATH be not proud, though some have called thee
Mighty and dreadfull, for, thou art not so,
For, those, whom thou think'st, thou dost overthrow,
Die not, poore death, nor yet canst thou kill me.
From rest and sleepe, which but thy pictures bee, 5
Much pleasure, then from thee, much more must flow,
And soonest our best men with thee doe goe,
Rest of their bones, and soules deliverie.

這也是整部電影的核心.生,死之間,是一個逗號,還是一個驚嘆號? Ashford說, 生、死、永生，他們之隔著小小的逗號，只需經過小憩，我們將會永生.

值得一提的是,一直協助Vivian治療的Jason,一個醫學院的年輕學生,恰巧大學期間修過Vivian的課.他英俊,聰明,野心,意氣奮發,認為 「癌」是極為了不起的,完美的,因此潛心研究癌症.像我們都會在生活中遇到的男生一樣,他們優秀出色,只是這樣的他們,身上缺少一種personal feeling, 或 human kindness, 或是中文的人文情懷.這份人情關懷與善意,Vivian在病重後期一直期求著.

Vivian一直知道,自己的病不會痊癒,有段詩,她在檢查時自言自語, : 「This is my play’s last scene, here, heavens appoint my Phil grime’s last mile. And my race, idly, yet quickly run. Hath this last pace. My span’s last inch. My minute’s last point. And gluttonous death will instantly unjoint my body and soul. 」
極度恐慌時,Vivian自言自語, 「我要躲起來」,躲開上帝,蜷縮成一小團.她已經漸行漸遠.
E.M. Ashford是唯一來看望Vivian的人,當初德高望重的導師,這時卻更像是慈母,脫掉了冬靴,躺上Vivian的病床,擁抱著她,就像是哄自己的孩子入睡,她朗讀的不是John Donne的詩歌,Vivian不想再思考John Donne迷一樣的詩,一本童話書才是最好的, 「Now is the time for simplicity.」
Vivian在兔寶寶的童話故事裡,漸漸睡去,淚流滿面,是因為痛,還是感懷?
