這麼成熟的少女還是不用「教育」了

British drama An Education takes place in the social turbulent 1960s, and its story follows the life of a 16-year-old schoolgirl Jenny Mellor (played by Carey Mulligan) who lives in a London suburb with her parents.

Talented and beautiful, Mellor's one true ambition in life had always been to study at Oxford University until David Goldman (played by Peter Sarsgaard), a man twice her age, enters the picture and nearly ruins her life after whisking her off her feet.

Based on the autobiographical memoir of British journalist Lynn Barber, An Education has earned three Oscar nominations for its convincingly portrayal of an innocent teen's coming of age story. But that's about all the movie offers.

The wealthy Goldman introduces the impressionable and young Mellor to the world at-large, taking her to Paris where she decides to quit her studies and become his wife. Her decision backfires when she learns that Goldman is already married and has a child.

For moviegoers that have lost since grown out of their teen years, An Education fails to "educate" viewers about anything new. The film's story tries to explore the question of how a young woman can find happiness, but ends abruptly, leaving little more than remnants of a hackneyed old-guy-seduces-young-girl yarn.

Mulligan, a 24-year-old British actress, plays the part of Mellor technically well, but her performance ultimately lacks qualities one would expect of a precocious 16-year-old.

An Education is lost opportunity for teenage viewers, which begs the question of how this movie was able to receive so many Oscar nominations in the first place.

On a scale of one to ten, An Education gets an uneducated five.
