Everybody is discussing if, in the end, the real identity of the main character is Teddy or Andrew.

I guess we'll never know because of the simple fact that dear old 馬丁 has a strong and very well-made point whose roots come from a simple philosophical question: how could you really know if reality, as you perceive it, is actually real? Or, putting it in other terms, how could you really assert that you are, or not, insane?

Like the character Morpheus says to Neo in The Matrix: "Have you ever had a dream, Neo, that you were so sure was real? What if you were unable to wake from that dream? How would you know the difference between the dream world and the real world?"

This is the most tragic side of the story: both scenarios are completely possible, and Teddy can't make anything to resolve this equation. Either he trust what his mind tells him (a mind that may not be working correctly) or he trust what other people are telling him (which may be lying). There's no way he can prove anything unless he gets out of that damn island, and even if he could escape, two things are likely to avoid him finding the truth: 1-either he is Andrew, but he could keep having hallucinations that reinforce his 'Teddy' story (as Dr. Cawley explained); or 2-he is Teddy but mind-altering drink, food, drugs and smoke gave him fictional memories and convince him of his new identity, Andrew.

This conundrum is what I think is the best of the film, but if we really need to attempt to solve it, reflexive thinking ahead:

The Teddy Is Teddy and Andrew is Andrew Scenario:
* Chuck is part of the conspiracy.
* Chuck doesn't know how to pull his gun out of his holster because he's not a Marshall; he's pretending as part of the whole acting.
* Police and guards acting paranoid since he arrives is also part of the role-playing, in order to everything to make sense later ("oh, that's why they were all nervous, because I was freely hanging around!")
* Dr. Sheehan: maybe he was 'silenced' (and that's why the worried answer from the nurse).
* There was never a patient named Rachel Solando. As Chuck reveals to Ted (and he does it to earn more of Ted's trust), everything is a setup (which is real).
* Andrew Laeddis is dead, possibly murdered or lobotomized till death after beating Noyce: 1) Noyce says to Ted that "Laeddis is not in the building, maybe in A or the lighthouse" and 2) the crazy husband-murderer woman gets very emotional when Ted questions about Laeddis because she knows that she could end the same way.
* The crazy husband-murderer woman waits until Chuck (part of the conspiracy) leaves to write down "RUN", knowing that everything is a setup.
* The paper found in Rachel's cell: a note created by the doctor so everything makes sense later (that Ted is the 67th patient, etc).
* Law of 4 is tricky: the name Rachel Solando is invented by looking for a possible anagram for Dolores Chanal, Ted's wife. But, coincidentally, Andrew Laeddis is right, though. I give you that.
* The kids are fake. Only the girl is real and she's the one he remembers from the Nazi camp.
* And why all this effort instead of just killing him? Maybe because he's a Marshall after all, and it's easier and safely supported to prove he lost his sanity (as Dr. Solando explains in the cave). Maybe because Ted is precisely the demonstration of the experiments Ted himself says to Chuck: making a person to become another. That's why the Warden is there: a military expecting a successful experiment so he can reproduce it for military purposes.

The Teddy Is Andrew and Andrew is Teddy Scenario:
* Chuck is actually Dr. Sheehan, Andrew's psychologist.
* Sheehan doesn't know how to pull his gun out of his holster because he's not a Marshall; he's a psychologist.
* Police and guards acting paranoid since he arrives because there goes the most dangerous patient freely hanging around.
* There was never a patient named Rachel Solando. Law of 4.
* He is Andrew Laeddis; 1) Noyce says to Andrew that "you can't kill Laeddis *and* find the truth; you have to choose one" and 2) the crazy husband-murderer woman gets very emotional when Andrew questions her about himself because of the bizarre situation.
* The crazy husband-murderer woman waits until Andrew's psychologist leaves and writes down "RUN", knowing that Andrew's will be lobotomized if he doesn't return to sanity.
* The paper found in Rachel's cell: a note created by the doctor, as a clue.
* Law of 4 is right.
* The kids are real. The girl has more relevance because of his mind associating it with the Nazi camp girl.
* And why all this effort instead of just... lobotomizing him? Well, that's the answer. The doctor supports new-school methods.

Surely there are many more clues and details but it's late here and I'm tired. Please feel free to add any other you consider interesting.
