瑪莉 and Max, You and Me

Well, when I sat in the classroom, good news came to me, movie time! According to this, I immediately moved to the front-row seat. Woo-ah! Here we go!

When I first started watching this movie, 瑪莉 and Max, I found a little bit disappointed, it is a cartoon movie, and it was the most simple and crude cartoon movie I had ever seen, I said to myself. Because it is an Argil cartoon! I even recollected our childhood cartoon Nesiridin Ependi, although it is a dull cartoon. Just that kind of things which never attract me.

But when the story went on, I changed my mind. It is a strange but sincere piece. From it, I saw two imperfect persons talked to each other by writing letters. That was some sorts of soul exchange; they discussed chocolate and other delicious food, confessed their puzzles to the world, dissect their own disadvantages and gave suggestions to the other person involved. The distance was outland, but I would say, it was the situation of mind act upon mind.

In Max’s last letter, he said, 「The reason I forgive you is because you are not perfect. You are imperfect and so am I. All humans are imperfect, even the men outside my apartment who litters. When I was young, I wanted to be anybody but myself…I would have to accept myself, my warts and all, and that we don't get to choose our warts. They are a part of us and we have to live with them. We can, however, choose our friends and I am glad I have chosen you…You are my best friends. You are my only friend.」

This is true friendship in my mind, and also, true life.

Nearly everybody waste a great amount of time to be somebody else, a standard else. We try to learn to hate ourselves, constantly examining ourselves every day, in order to avoid becoming bad kids or anomalies. Then anxieties arise and accompany us all the time.

Oh, to be somebody else—the seemingly unique correct choice, the broad road, the guiding lighthouse of our voyage.

You are sick, if there’s no many so called 「healthy」 characters on you, then you are defined 「sick」.

If you are not rich, not good-looking, and born slow in acting, you suffer a lot! So since you were very young, you must care about the buttons of your clothes, your hair, your walking manners, and your talking speed when you were asking a question, even the vegetables and colors you like…

Or you will be marginalized, be banished to the borderline of the world, handicapped in communicating abilities and opportunities, and having blue fear, hate yourself everyday, lack of sense of security, and restrict your activities to a designated area or sphere that is only several square meters wide.

If you do not want to sink into these 「mires」, you must hide your inside, pursue progress just as anyone else do, keep warm complexion and speech, wear clothes somebody else prefer, put on sunny smile and tread on eggs to keep watching，in order to prevent revealing your thoughts. Only by doing this you can make sure that you wouldn』t be treat as a mental patient.

What a fragile life!

Everyone wants to love himself, and nobody hold you back, you cower only on account of the anticipative difficulties of climbing over the cutting edge. The knot is hard to untie, the scar is painfully to union.

Maybe that’s why we need friends, especially, a best friend, perhaps, the only friend. 瑪莉 and Max, You and Me.

This is what I want to say about the movie.

After reading some background of the movie, I deem it is better to correct my anterior expression 「crude cartoon movie」. This movie is made of 132,480 pieces of independent pictures, and the whole group takes 5 years to complete the masterpiece. Around the whole movie 212 argil performers and 475 props were used. All of them were hold between the fingers. To make the argil persons talk, even 1026 different mouths were designed. I should say, this is the most diligent cartoon I have ever seen.
