Summary of To Kill a Mocking Bird

Summary of To Kill a Mocking Bird
During 1960s, Scout Finch lived with her brother Jem Finch and her father Atticus Finch in a sleepy town of Maycomb.
It was said that a boy named Boo Radley were kept in his room mysteriously. In summer, there came a new boy called Dill who took a vocation with his aunt. All the three children were curious about this poor Boo. One night, they ran to the Radley Place in order to see this mysterious Boo. Unfortunately, Boo’s brother discovered them and terrified them away. Another mysterious thing happened to the Finch children as well. Jem kept finding different little presents in a hole of a certain tree near their house and had no idea where they came from. One day, Boo’s brother plugged up the hole with cement.
Atticus decided to take on a case in which a black man named Tom 羅賓森 was accused of raping a very poor white girl called Mayella Ewell. There was a wide gap between the white and the black. Almost every white people didn』t believe Tom 羅賓森 was innocent, however, Atticus still insisted on defending him because he knew everyone was created equal and the courts should be the great levelers. Because their father’s defense of a black man, Scout and Jem heard their classmates say Atticus as a "******-lover. Scout was hot-tempered and had many fights against her classmates who said so. However, after Atticus』 wonderful defense, the jury thought Tom 羅賓森 guilty. Right after the court, Tom was sent to the prison and he tried to ran away crazily. But, unfortunately, Tom was shoot dead by a guard.
At Halloween night, Jem and Scout were caught by Mr. Ewell in the woods and he wanted to kill the two children. At that very moment, there came a man fighting against Mr. Ewell and rescued Jem. When Scout ran back home, she discovered that it was Boo who saved her and her brother. Later, to their surprise , Mr. Ewell was dead with a knife in his hand.

As far as I am concerned, this film is about how to know and understand others. When Mr. Cunningham’s son was invited to the Finches, Atticus said he felt it was a sin to kill a mocking bird because 『mockingbirds don't do anything but make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat people's gardens, don't nest in the corncrib, they don't do one thing but just sing their hearts out for us. 』 Tom 羅賓森 symbolized the innocent mocking bird. The huge race discrimination happened because the white misunderstood the black and thought they were all evil and would kill them all which was totally wrong. Besides race discrimination, Boo was also a example indicating that people would believe the rumor about the terrifying picture of Boo even though they had never seen him. However, it turned out that Boo was a kind man instead of a horrible one. At the end of the film, Scout said 『One time Atticus said you never really knew a man until you stood in his shoes and walked around in them』 which is the theme of this film.

Famous Lines:
  There's a lot of ugly things in this world, son. I wish I could keep 'em all away from you. That's never possible.

  Well, I reckon because mockingbirds don't do anything but make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat people's gardens, don't nest in the corncrib, they don't do one thing but just sing their hearts out for us.

  Looks like she didn't have nobody to help her. I felt right sorry for her. She seemed...

  Uh, no. It's an agreement reached by mutual consent. Now, here's the way it works. You concede the necessity of goin to school, we'll keep right on readin' the same every night, just as we always have. Is that a bargain?

  Scout: Atticus, I was just saying to Mr. Cunningham that entailments were bad but not to worry. Takes a long time sometimes... [to the men who are staring up at her]
  Scout: What's the matter? I sure meant no harm, Mr. Cunningham.

   I don't know if it will help saying this to you... some men in this world are born to do our unpleasant jobs for us... your father is one of them.

  One time Atticus said you never really knew a man until you stood in his shoes and walked around in them;

  The summer that had begun so long ago had ended, and another summer had taken its place, and a fall, and Boo Radley had come out.
