On being on the way
To be en route is a way of living. By alienating the self from the familiar and ordinary, one becomes once again open to chance and all possibilities. For this reason the road has often been understood as an important means of transformation. But this transformation does not necessarily have to be a religious enlightenment. By the same token, when on the way, one doesn't have to be a pilgrim. For a pilgrimage has a definite end, but a journey can be open-ended. Being on the way is becoming.
