Everywhere is 芝加哥
Among the films, I give a preference for musicals on no reason. 芝加哥 is such sort of a movie. It adapted from a play which shows on Broadway stage successfully and then changed into a movie. It talks about some story which shows up within the city—芝加哥, where vanity and desire flows in the air and every new things, especially the news, are spring up like mushrooms, which emerges fast and die out soon, just like a small stone sparking a bust of spray then soon devoured by the vast, mighty ocean. As an individual among the society, we can never change anything and you can only follow it.
There are three major conflicts in the film. One is the conflict between Roxie and Velma. As for Velma, the little rising star on the stage, in the city 芝加哥, commit a crime for she killed her disloyal husband and her twin sister. However, she does not think herself guilty. She thought them ask for it. Moreover, she tries to make the use of media and public opinion to cleaning her charges and become even more famous. Nevertheless, unfortunately, Roxie destroy her plans. The blonde woman is full of dreams and desire to become a celebrity as Velma does. After she fails to get on the stage through the furniture man, she killed him, and after all, her pathetic husband revealed that it was his beautiful, lovely wife---Roxie killed that man. Thus, the conflict between Velma and Roxie began. They make every effort to fight for the media spotlight. Hence, a series of lies goes on.
The second conflict is about truth and lie. In order to cover her crime, Roxie said many lies, such as theft, pregnant and so on. She chose to take advantage of public sympathy to clean her charges and raise awareness, even attempt to become celebrities through media. She even uses her body as an exchange of vanity. At last, she gains nothing, but guilty verdict and a husband which she not like that much.
Another conflict is between the lawyer 比利 and his client Roxie. 比利 Flynn----the said undefeated lawyer over his case, is actually a real hypocrite. He said he cares about nothing but love, but actually, he cares about money and reputation. He wants to control Roxie, and strive hard for more exposure before spotlight. Consequently, a competition between him and Roxie began.
What’s more, as a Post-modern movie, the movie is also full of laugh. However, after we watch it, we understand that the 芝加哥 is only an epitome of the universe, so does those people like Roxie, Velma, 比利 Flynn and Mama Morton. In not only the past, but also now, vanity, money, desire and media are all temptation to people’s heart.
I like this movie, not only because it is a musical like My Fair Lady, but also because it applies wonderful irony. It reminds us the world we live is crucial for nothing lives long and vanity is only a veil that made up of smog beyond our reach.
