陶然忘機

Mill is still the mill, cross is still the cross.

The mill represents the monotone and speechless life of flemish people inhabited in Flanders, which was occupied by Spain. The cross symbolizes religious suppression they face, even though they believed that people of all religions can live in harmony despite their differences. The fact that heretics are condamned to be crucified, the humblest method of execution in early Christianity reveals their position in the eyes of their suzerain. Towards the end of the movie, they gathered to dance not with a cheerfull mood. Yes, life is still life as it was.
