What we are educated for?

      After watching the enlightening movie Dead Poets Society, I have always been thinking one question, one that seems to be the very first one that everyone would ask and want to find the answers to ever since they became a student. And the question is what we are educated for.
      During the time when I was still a middle school student, the whole purpose of teaching, as far as I am concerned, is nothing but a guarantee of a passport to get students admitted to key universities, which might also be the only thing teachers are aiming at now. So with this purpose deeply-rooted in their mind, it won』t be surprising to find out the depressing fact that most of the teachers have been reduced to the so-called 『teach-book-smith』 while the ultimate goal of education is to produce more university graduates. However, our education has inevitably become a victim of its own success when its mass product cannot meet the demand of the market.
      I cannot tell whether Mr. Keating is right or wrong but I do agree that the aim of education is not to simply teach students what they should learn and what they should do but to provide them a wide range of possibilities to be successful by regarding them as unique individuals. So referring to the questions mentioned above, I think we are educated for possessing the abilities to be a free thinker and be responsible for every decision we made on our own in our lives.
