Why a beautiful woman, wants to be married?
At the beginning of the story, Bill and Alice are invited by Victor Ziegler, a rich client of Bill, to an upper-class Christmas party. The Harfords, fine-looking and loyal to each other, are both seduced by upper-class members of the opposite sex. However, they at last resisted the seductions and kept their loyalty to marriage. When the story commences, it seems that ethical loyalty has conquered our barbarous desires. But think over the words Sandor Szavost said to Alice, when this gentleman intended to seduce Alice: why a beautiful woman, who could have any man in this room, wants to be married? These words expresses that, in his eyes, their loyalty to marriage is strange and fragile, it implies that the moral values they hold will soon lay in ruins.
In this movie, ethical constraints and instinctive desires are the fundamental contradiction. Specifically speaking, it’s a contradiction between marriage and sexuality. Marriage, is a kind of ethical constraint, and is a product of human civilization. Bill and Alice believe in marriage, or in other words, their sexuality is restrained by marriage. On the other hand, the rich and the powerful don』t believe in marriage, they believe in sexual desires. So the upper-class Christmas party is full of sexual advances, and they can hold unthinkable sex parties to actualize their desires. This is the difference between the powerful and ordinary people: in this civilization, the powerful can actualize their desires in a larger degree than the ordinary people, and the ordinary people are always restrained by ethical principles, or we say by the civilization. But the powerful don』t need to worry about that. Therefore, Sandor Szavost’s weird question to Alice is fairly understandable.
Bill is not a powerful figure, Bill believes in marriage, he never realizes that he is restrained and manipulated by this civilization. Hence when he discovered that there is a completely different world of anti-moral sexuality, his values collapsed. He and Alice gradually understand that marriage is merely a mask of sexual desires, the mask is used to cover the guilty for sexuality given by sense of morality and restrain our greedy desires. But unfortunately, only the powerful can get rid of the restraints, and even the powerful cannot take the mask off—they are also afraid of the power of moral judgement—in the crazy sex party, everybody has to wear a mask. So Bill and Alice are confused and frustrated, and at last they have to accept that they cannot avoid being restrained by marriage, by the civilization. Though marriage opposes their sexual desire, at the same time it’s the only way they can actualize this desire—because they are not the powerful. So in the last scene, Alice said to Bill: There is something very important, that we need to do as soon as possible--fuck.
At last, the scheme of civilization is discovered, but we can do nothing about it. This is the absurd in this world.
