This is inspired by the true story of Korea's first publicized (and still unsolved) serial killer case. After watching this movie, the audience are curious that where is the real killer gone, who seems to be the center plot line of this movie. However,as far as I concerned, the focus of this movie is not the killer, but the suspects and everyone involved in this case at that time.
I love it for the fact that during it, I was in a small village in South Korea in a terrible era of sirens blaring, military dictatorship, and the hopeless pursuit of a serial killer. I landed back here in this time and place with a thud, only after turning off the DVD player, and going to fetch a glass of water. While I was caught there mentally---I felt the desperation, and I felt the defeat and the sorrow of the detectives, who were essentially decent enough human beings when all was said and done.
From this movie, the best part is to see how the normal people struggled to earn a living——even you can not call it a living, just keep the breath rather than die.I was shocked and moved by the way they deal with the big emptiness and desperation in their lives.
I quite admire the director,Joon-ho Bong, who also shoots the Host.In his works,I feel a special concern of him about the world around him which is not that good.To reveal the truth about Korean under the peace life on the surface,he always mix the subject with very confusing news and stories, which looks exciting and funny with a cruel reality under it.
I can』t help compare this movie with another American movie,No Country for Old Men,which also portraits a story that the murder get away. Both of the two movie shows the powerless feeling of a man has.However.Memories of Murder is much more complicated to show a complex society of Korean.Compared to the life of American in No Country for Old Men,the life of people in Memories of Murder have a special culture atmosphere of eastern Asia.
The truth in 1986
Set specifically in 1986, the film visually captures the changes in industrializing, modernizing and politically restive South Korea, where new, dark, noisy factories were sprouting up in the middle of agricultural areas. From the opening shot that could be out of "Witness," we see a peasant bring what looks like a city sophisticated cop to a crime scene.
Korea in 1986 is a country without too much smart phones, idol pop singers and industries. At that time people feed on agriculture and heavy work repeatedly in factory.Young cop have the only way to express is through violence.(Detective Cho Yong-koo)Retarded son follows the beautiful lady he likes wandering around those long day time without a well education and ended his life playing on the rail way.(The first suspect)Desperate husband have to go to the woods to take a fresh breath to masturbate with women underwear on,leaving his crazy wife and sick children behind at home.(The second suspect)Promising educated young man bear the rumors on his own working in a factory where never see sunshine.(The third suspect.)However, these life are all buried under the field grows wheat.
One night, when a man can』t bear the life with endless empty raped and killed a young lady, with rain falling on a small village at night, shadows darting across a thick field of grass, figures lurking in the woods.Suddenly, all the lives of people living on this ground were able to be seen by us.
To some point, the detective Park Doo-Man is the eye of the audience. He claims to have 'Shaman's eyes' so that he can see through the life of people. But then as the investigation continues he begins to realized that he just see what he wants to see to find a killer and quickly finish a case. What he saw is life full of miserable and confuse.Every suspect that he is sure is guilty turns out to be innocent and so at the DNA scene he completely realized that he does not have Shaman eyes.To be honest,no one can see clearly into the life at that time.
Media
In this film media plays an amusing role which reflects the awkward situation media lies in during that time.
Through the whole movie the journalists and media become one important part of the pressure the detective have.Actually this is a good thing to see that even in 1989 there exist some kind of democracy.
In one scene, the officer in the police station hates it when the journalists come to the spot of crime because he take it as a failure in his work. From this we can see at that time governments take peace as a good reputation.Nothing happens means everything is good so far. However,if something happens while it means the trouble is coming. On the other hand, the authority of media is still very high at that time.
However, this kind of relationship does』t seem to be the good one as we expected. The relationship between the government and the mass media was presented unhealthy. The detective once said」How lucky that the journalists Park didn』t come.He is quite annoying.」Even nothing he has to hide from the media,he still afraid of the journalist. This reveals that the government naturally stand at the opposite side of media.
Through the background TV broadcasts of demonstrations and civil defense alerts and drills, we gather that their interrogation procedures were more developed through oppressing political dissidents and forcing confessions than professional criminal detective work. Ironically, they ultimately can't get the resources they need in this difficult case because of these politically-drummed up time-consumers, especially for manpower and sophisticated forensic tools that they have to beg from the FBI.
Politics
During 80's south Korea had been ruled by military government. On one scene the siren which sounded when the killing is happen. that siren was controlled by military government. After the siren, nobody is allowed walking outside. They might think it could suppress anti-Gov group action. However,he siren had become the perfect chance for murder.
What’s more, there is a specific victim who is a high school student. In this movie, the director shows us some kind of special relation ship between this girl and the detective. At first this girl gives the detective some clue about the murderer. When the detective come to the school turn to this girl for help, she was under the tasks given by the military government to do the air defence exercises. This girl get hurt during the exercises when the detective help her with a band-aid.
Unfortunately, this girl was raped on a raining night. And the director let us witness the moment the murderer was hesitating to pick up one victim, which make it more cruelly.Later on the detective arrived on the spot and find that piece of band-aid he stick on the hurt of the girl is still on.Ironically, the military governments』 efforts proves useless to save the life of one single girl. All the government gave to her is just hurt.
In Memories of Murder, I saw this human factor almost too painfully. By the end of the story, I was in tears. Even now, the mood prevails. It's been so long since these crimes took place, and I don't know absolutely that they remain unsolved.Maybe when the movie is released, the murderer went to the cinema with the other 5million Korean audience to date back to that dark times.
An untrusted government just like a dangerous raining night.I feel lucky that bad times passed and nowadays Korean have made such progress that we need not to worry while walking in a raining day.
