For your piece, you, the public and the Navy want to show the glory; I unfortunately see the tragedy of it.
Once again it is an example of using the wrong tools for the mission and getting good people killed because of it.
If you were to back off from the constant publicity campaign, ask yourself, why is the Navy doing ground combat missions in the mountains of a land-locked country? What expertise do they have that the Army and Marines don』t?
The fact is, Naval Special Warfare has been out of its lane for a long time now and has had a long string of costly failures because of it.
The good special warfare organizations around the world start with a core of infantryman, trained and with years of experience in the fundamentals of ground combat.
The US Navy thinks it can take ship-drivers, mechanics, quartermasters and cooks; put them through a hard selection course, give them time to stay in superb shape, give them lots of toys, then say they can do any mission anywhere.
That is a preposterous formula and one which nobody else tries to use.
The Navy has an expertise in water operations and should stay there.
The British for example, to have a naval special warfare capability, start with their marines.
The US Navy chain of command doesn』t know better because they don』t know ground combat; the Joint and Department of Defense chains of command are afraid to criticize one of their services; the SEALs unfortunately have come to be committed to their own propaganda and can』t back away from their image even if they wanted to.
There is a reason why Naval Special Warfare is the least respected within the US Special Operations community.
These kinds of stories just reinforce the facts of the matter. It is a systemic failure which has been repeated numerous times, then white-washed with a lot of awards to make it look like the cost of doing hard missions. It really is a tragedy as much for those sent wrongly to do these missions, as it is for our Armed Forces and country as a whole.
- Retired Army Special Forces officer (with multiple live operational missions with Navy Special Warfare and other US/Allied organizations)
