We have studied English literature this term and one of the novels are about adventure which named the Gulliver's Travels. That story tells about four islands that human never know and see. Among them, there is Laputa which is also shown in this movie.
I don't think the movie is as good as I have considered, for the director is Hayao Miyazaki. I have seen his movie A Voyage of Chihiro which was highly thought of. Comparing with that, the characters designed in this movie, Laputa: Castle in the Sky, were so flattening. That is, the evil is always evil and the kind is always kind. Thers is no such a extraordinary intensely changes between the experiences they have gone through with. It is very different from A Voyage of Chihiro, maybe because the theme is different.
Theme of this movie is about protecting and chasing. In the vision of a child(for it is a animation), the theme will change into friendship and how to fight against the evil. So, let's talk about the theme I have read from the movie.
When I say chasing, I mean everyone is a chaser in the movie, even in the real world. Pazu is working for a mining industry, the workers of it are chasing for vaulable things in the stone in order to survive. Back to Pazu, his father was a hiker who was chasing for adventure things and left a picture of Laputa. This light up Pazu's dream of finding the island which he had already prepared for building his own flying ship. The girl he met, Sheeta, was chasing for a peaceful life with the stone her mother gave her. The general chased for a large fortune, so did his army. The boss is chasing for the stone and the power, the king of Laputa. THe pirates are chasing for the fortune.
They all have different purposes but gather in the same way. When emotions are showing between the chasing things, things changed. Pazu wanted to protect Sheeta because of the friendship. The pirates wanted to help Pazu and Sheeta in order to reach thier own purpose. It seems they are not so evil as we see from the begining.
The most impressive thing is why Laputa met the inevitable extinction. It didn't show in the movie and become the big mystery for audiences to think about.
