Battle of Humanity,高二英語作業
There has never been a good war or a bad peace.
------Benjamin Franklin
Since there have been human beings, various wars emerged in an endless stream.World War Ⅱ is
an extremely significant event of the 20th century for both America and the world. There are also a large number of films about it,among which Saving Private Ryan is an outstanding one.And the film, directed by 史蒂夫n Spielberg, proved to be a milestone in the history of cinema.
史蒂夫n Spielberg maybe not your favourite director ,but he must be the most famous and influential one to everyone in the world. And the fact also proves that he is very good at shooting war films ,from Empire of the Sun and Schindler's List to Saving Private Ryan and War Horse. He created a classic and legend one after another. In this film,he shows us reflections of life and war,the hymn of humanity as well as the power of firm faith.
The film starts by a long scene about Normandy landing, which restores a true but cruel picture of history, tons of weapons, numerous soldiers and the sea of blood.Full of hope and unknowns, they get ashore on the Omaha Beach, not knowing if they will survive there. As a consequence, countless soldiers died there.Captain Miller has seen all this. The look that is filled with unseeing and fortitude is what I cannot forget for a life time.Shocked and sad as he is,he is determined to take his men to break through the enemy defence and eventually they make it.After the great loss, officials find that a mother in America has lost three of her four boys.So the government sends Captain Miller to search for her fourth son,詹姆士 Ryan. And their journey begins.
Captain Miller is the hero of the film and he is also a hero.He is valiant, selfless and firm just like the U.S. spirit.Ryan, the centre of their journey,is loyal and fearless too.He stands for the hope and success. He is the power supporting his teammates to move on.However, among all the roles, surgeon Wade and sniper 傑克森 are my favourite.I can see the humanity concern from Wade.He is kind and considerate, although the scene that he rushes to save the wound is somewhat symbolic and unreal,he is sensitive as well as thoughtful when he tells stories about her mother and copies the letter for Capazo. His death nearly moves me to tears.Wade is like every nice person around us,perfect but real.
傑克森 is also an individual character. His pious belief encourages him to live on.He holds the faith and hopes that the god can favour him,the god did so except the last time.
「Be not thou far from me,O Lord
all my strength, haste thee to help me
O my God, I trust in thee
let me not be ashamed
let not my enemies triumph over me
blessed be the Lord, my strength
which teaches my hands to war,my fingers to fight
my goodness and my fortress
my high tower and my deliverer
my shield and he in whom I trust」
Upham is the most controversial character in the film.Lots of people think he is weak and selfish. While in my opinion,Upham is the most successive role. What he,the interpreter, acts in the film is just what will we do in a war.He is also an ordinary person and he is also so young. Many people think that it is him that caused so many deaths. But he shows the remaining benevolence in a turbulent age as well.
I think the film is more about arguments over humanity than the war itself. For the world, you are just a man;for someone, you are the whole world.War is fear cloaked in courage and a tool to show ambition. It reminds me of a song, blowing in the wind,by Bob Dylan.
"How many roads must a man walk down before they call him a man
How many seas must a white dove sail before she sleeps in the sand
How many times must the cannon balls fly before they're forever banned
The answer my friend is blowing in the wind
How many years must a mountain exist before it is washed to the sea
How many years can some people exist before they're allowed to be free
How many times can a man turn his head and pretend that he just doesn't see
The answer my friend is blowing in the wind
How many times must a man look up before he can see the sky
How many ears must one man have before he can hear people cry
How many deaths will it take till he knows that too many people have died
The answer my friend is blowing in the wind
The answer is blowing in the wind"
War is always a question that we have to face. How many wars are enough? No one knows the answer. But I believe that hope is always blowing in the wind over the battlefield.
"Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof thru the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave,
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?"
The national anthem will always sings for those people, who are privates, soldiers, warriors and patriots that the history will never abandon and forget.
