The worldview & the values of the Portokalos family

My big fat wedding is a romantic comedy film which is centered on a Greek family in the USA and their cultural gaps with Americans through the daily life in the Portokalos family especially Toula's love with Ian—a non-Greek man. After watching the movie, I find the Portokalos family has very different values from American people. As far as I am concerned, the values of the Portokalos family are as follows.
Firstly, the Portokalos family attaches great importance to marriage. On the one hand, we can obviously see this in the beginning of the movie. Mr. Portokalos murmured to his daughter the following words: "you are better getting married soon, you are starting to look.......old. What they think is that all nice greek girls are supposed to do 3 things in life: marry great boys, make great babies and feed everyone.......until the day we die. On the other hand, when Toula was a little girl in Greek school, what her teacher asked the students was something like this: A has one sheep, B has 9 sheep, and when could they get married? Of course, this question is of fun. However, it reflects the deep-rooted marital and family values of Greek people in some way.
Secondly, they are overly proud of their country and traditional culture. They believe that their culture is the best in the world. Mr. Portokalos insisted there are only two kinds of people in the world. One part is someone who is a Greek, the other part is someone who wants to be a Greek. Another evidence to prove this is that Mr. Portokalos insisted that every English word originates from Greek character. He also explained several ones to verify his view, despite implausible. Mr. Portokalos also said that when we Greek people were creating history, philosophy, literature and so on, other peoples were still climbing trees. All above also shows Greek people tend to recall the past.
What's more, the Portokalos family has stronger national obturation while Americans are more open. At first, Toula's parents disagree her dating with non-Greeks. And she goes to Greek school, live among Greek relatives and work in her family's restaurant. The fact that all Toula's families and friends are Greeks illustrates that Greeks are more pleasant to have relations with natives and keep long distance with non-Greeks.
In addition, The Portokalos family has larger power distance than that of the US. For example, Toula's father said that" I am the man of the house." He ignored his son's design for the menu cover, interfered Toula's marriage. Besides, Mr. Portokalos is content to make decision.
Besides, The Portokalos family is a family with great collectivism. Passion, liveliness and unity is a sign of their family. There are about thirty people in their family. They enjoy the happiness of getting together. Ian has only two cousins while Toula has twenty-seven. At the same time, when Toula visit Ian's family, there are only his parents. However, Ian's parents are overwhelmed at the sight of Toula's huge family when they are invited to Toula's home.
Last but not least, the Portokalos family is very loyal to the religion. They cross immediately when they say something bad and the big family insist that the big wedding must be held at the church.
Inspite of all the cultural differences between the Portokalos family and the US family, they became one family eventually. Just as what Mr. Portokalos said, orange and apple are both fruit. Love can resolve any problems. Families are always there for us.
