everyone has problems

看完之後覺得很難受，整部片子的基調過於抑鬱，所傳達的主題是：「儘管人生艱難如此，我們還是不得不好好活下去」。

男主對於自己的身世並未有過多的提及，母親的自殺似乎對於他而言是一個邁不過去的坎，後來無法愛上別人，無法讓自己得臉上綻放陽光，或許都與之有關。

劇中的每個人都背負著沉痛，活著對每個人來說都是種負擔，但大家無能為力只能選擇維持現狀。也就應了那句話：「只要活著，一切都會變好的。」

男主身為一名教師，可以說是成功的，拯救了一個個誤入歧途的學生，但最終不能救贖自己。從自私者的角度而言，如果每個人都能拯救自己，世界才會太平。

「你不能對我有所期待」。男主對小女孩艾瑞卡說。男主拯救了艾瑞卡使其沒有淪為站街女，卻最終送她去了收養院。有時候一些處於好心的善舉，往往會引發一些悲傷，很大程度上是人性深處對於愛和陪伴的渴望。

你收留了我，我希望這種關係能維持一輩子。你拯救了我，我希望你也能愛上我。然而，沒有。

梅樂蒂自殺了。並不是男主的錯，卻讓他內心沉痛不已。任何一個生命的逝去都是沉痛的，如果恰巧與自己有關，那將會是一輩子的陰影。沒有愛，就沒有希望；沒有希望，活著只是行屍走肉。你能看見我，但我是空虛的。

暴力、色情、偏見、絕望，似乎這就是人生逃不開的幾個命題。從高貴的教育家女校長，到自甘沉淪的站街女，誰都逃不開失望帶來的困擾。

「所為失敗，就是讓所有人失望，包括自己。」

何謂超脫，應該不是死亡。如梅樂蒂所言，死亡只是暫時的解脫，真正的detachment，應該是絕望，對萬事萬物都無感，無牽無掛。

最後附上結尾的那首詩《The Fall of the House of Usher》：

During the whole of a dull, dark, and soundless day in the autumn of the year,

when the clouds hung up oppressively low in the heavens,

I had been passing alone, on horseback, through a singularly dreary tract of country;

and at length found myself, as the shades of the evening drew on, within view of the melancholy House of Usher.

I know not how it was -- but, with the first glimpse of the building, a sense of insufferable gloom pervaded my spirit.

I looked upon the simple landscape features of the domain.

upon the bleak walls, upon a few white trunks of decayed trees -- with an utter depression of soul.

There was an iciness, a sinking, a sickening of the heart.
