There's a certain timelessness to Garrel's style. Gradating greys and impromptu sound recording (or a careful imitation thereof) invariably invoke the veneration reserved for the French New Wave, or the nostalgic but removed reminiscence for a bygone era. Monotonic voice-overs are sprinkled here and there to mark the passage of time or to describe character motives. The camera also keeps its distance, preferring mid focal length and, much like Pierre, glued to its central characters yet refusing to understand.
