Just watched Ghost in the Shell
As far as plot and characterisations go, I do like the movie. I like the mix of thriller and action, though I don't think the philosophical questions inherent in the protagonist's situation have been properly explored, let alone resolved.
I don't know how I feel about the setting. Instead of Japan, the setting is now a mix of various Asian cities. I recognised the Hong Kong bits. And I trust there are some Tokyo bits (and one of the characters speaks Japanese while all others speak English).
They could have used Tokyo and thus made the setting a character in itself, but no, they had to mix and match and ended up with nothing to tie the character down with. I don't know, it felt a bit like appropriation and exploitation.
I did wonder about how much input or censorship the film might have with the mainland Chinese movie companies.
And while I do like Scarlett Johansson a lot, I really feel this character has been whitewashed. But yeah, I enjoyed the movie; it was entertaining enough to keep me occupied for hour and a half.
