Love Actually is All Around
Love Actually, a wonderful British romantic comedy, which premiered in Leicester Square in London on the November 16th in 2003, by the famous director Richard Curtis as its director and screenwriter. Love Actually, as its name implies, shows us some stories about love, actually, ten stories, and the author wants to use these stories to make us believe that love actually, is all around. And in fact, I have to say, he makes it.
Based on the Eve of Christmas Day in London, the movie tells ten separate but interrelated stories. The beginning is a series of pictures of people hugging and kissing each other in the airport, and at the same time, the voice of the narrator appears, 「Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow airport」, 「you'll find that love actually is all around」. Then, with the appearance of the characters and the beginning of the stories, we enter a world full of love. In the 135-minute film, Richard tells us a truth that love is supreme and the true love transcends everything.
The new British Prime Minister falls in love with the maid, however, because of the difference between their identities, it is not easy for the prime minister to express his feeling, but finally, they cross the barriers and get together, which shows us that love transcends identity and status. An English novelist and a Portuguese waitress have different languages but they have a soul communication and can understand each other, which tells that love transcends languages.
There are ten stories totally, but they won』t give you the impression of a mess, because the characters have some connections with each other, and the relation network can string all the characters and stories together. For example, the wife of the man who is having an affair is the prime minister's sister, and the lover is her husband’s secretary, what’s more, the secretary and the photographer are friends, and so on. But in fact, even if the audience don』t notice the relationship between the characters, the film also remains smooth, because it is the emotion that makes all the stories as a whole, not only the characters, which is a brilliant design of this movie. Despite the fact that the scene switches between different stories, the progress of each story and the emotion people experience are same.
Yes, I can』t deny that this movie has its drawbacks. The movie wants to be close to our daily life, but it is inevitable that there still some plots look like fairy tales or idol dramas. For instance, the Prime Minister falls in love with a maid. Or a young man who doesn't look good finds a beautiful girlfriend in America as soon as he arrives there. But even this only drawback, in my opinion, also makes people feel sweet and happy, because we have already suffered from some hardship in our daily life, so why not go and see something beautiful and fragrant, even if maybe it has a low probability of happening in real life.
Love Actually is a festival film indeed; however, it is not for the Valentine’s Day, but for the Christmas Day. It talks about love, not only just the love between couples, although it is a very important and very strong part, but also love between siblings, love between parents and children, love between spouses, puppy love, platonic love, unrequited love, and, of course, sexual or romantic love. It talks about the beginning of love, the courage of love, the abandon of love, the mistake of love and the patience of love. It is these feelings of love that hold this world together.
Love Actually is not a kind of boring farce, but a thought-provoking warm comedy that shows people, just as its name says, love actually, is all around.
