Review of《King of Comedy》

《King of Comedy》 is a comedy directed by Lee Lik-chi and Stephen Chow and released in February 13th,1999.
At the beginning of the film,the hero Yin Tian Chou (portrayed by Stephen Chow )shouts 「strive! struggle!」 facing the ocean.He is obesessed with performance and dreams to be an actor. So he always play some walk-on roles in the film. But most directors usually don』t feel satisfactory about him because he always act in his own way. In addition,in free time,he starts an actor training class for free in neighborhood welfare homes.
Liu Piao Piao(portrayed by Cecilia Cheung)is a dancing girl working for procuress who doesn』t know how to portray high school student in order to entertain and satisfy her clients. So the procuress takes her and her fellows to Yin Tian Chou’s class to learn how to act. During this period, Yin Tian Chou and Liu Piao Piao fall in love. With the help of Yin Tian Chou, Liu Piao Piao becomes popular in caberet. Later, Yin Tian Chou is greatly appreciated by the famous star-Du Juan Er(portrayed by Karen Mok) after being looked down all the time. And he is promoted to be the hero in a new film. Hpwever,unexpectedly, he is replaced in later,which makes him disappointed. Afterwards,he helps an undercover cop with a case unwittingly. Eventually,the film ends with a perfect dramatic performance in welfare homes and Du Juan ER also attends it.
This film exactly describs the difficult process before Stepfen Chow becomes famous and it also inspire people who are struggling for dream. This film has many highlights and Stephen Chow succeeds in interpreting the small potato-Yin Tian Chow incisively and vividly. For example, though he is just a wallk-on actor who is humilated by others again and again,he still says:」I』m an actor」,which shows his insistence and innocence. This film also describes that even small potatos like Yin Tian Chou and Liu Piao Piao are eager to be respected though they are pimping. There are also many details which depict characters vividly.
Compared with most of other films in which Stepfen Chow played a key role who was kind but astute, Stepfen Chow portrayed a completely kind and common man in this film. So《King of Comedy》is closer to people’s lives.
In a word,《King of Comedy》is really a classic. It has become the memory of several generations.   舉報
