The last emperor
Everyone wants to be an emperor, while emperor yearns for leaving his palace.
It has been a long time that film and television industry in China depicts emperor as a lucky man living a leisure and comfort life, sundered by enormous money and power, playing with countless beauties. Yet, this film the last emperor reveals some of the torturing experience in Forbidden City, in the view of an emperor being exerted with the task of reforming and reviving his country. And the result is, he falls. We can see his ambition in young age, his passion to carry out saving Qing dynasty reformation, his ultimate failure to keep his country; we can see ministers』 interference hindering his plans again and again, Japanese utilizing him to accomplish their scheme to conquer North-east China, his loved people continuing to leave him by out-of-control force.
It is a king of wired feeling to watch one person experience all these horrible incidents, being depressed time after time, and end up to be a normal person. He has tolerated many betrays, many strictly controls and behaved much more mature at a very young age. At 10, he missed the last glimpse to his foster mother when she was forced to leave the Forbidden City; at 15, no permission was given to him to pay a visit to his dead mother; at 40, he finally recognized that he was the just a political chess of Japan for them to reach the purpose of conquering the north-east of China. He has the ambition and dignity to be a good emperor, but the environment just doesn』t allow it happen. Sorrow haunted me while I helplessly view all the happiness, all the goodness just spill out of him, and never return.
The most point I prefer in the film is its way to narrate the whole life of our last emperor, Fu Yi, in a splendid yet moving way. It gets people sunk in the plot while watching it. Actually, before I saw this film, I didn't have much feeling about Fu Yi, the only impression he left for me was that many people rebuke him and his 「jack」 regime. Yet, now I sense much sorrow for his tragic life. This evil world takes away his happiness, his trust for others, his ability to see though himself and his wish to be a really good emperor. This merciless history turns him to be a sacrifice in his period.
Another amazing point about this film is that this film is that it set the background in real Forbidden City in Beijing, making it more real and charming. The Forbidden is gorgeous, exquisite and wide in space, maybe most of the extolment about architect can be used in it, but fancy appearance and equipment cannot conceal the repression, monotony and depression when restricted in this silent palace.
However, in my point of view, some of the characters such as Empress Dowager Cixi and Empress Wanrong, their descriptions in this film is not corresponding with my former memory about this history. Well, incidents concerning history truly disturb many people, or maybe no one knows what the truth is.
To sum up, this film is really an amazing one, revealing the entire life of Fu Yi, providing us some materials to learn about that history.
