review of the downfall
It just tells the last 12days of Adolf Hitler and the End of the Third reich. However the director choose the perspectives do not like others. It shows the crazy and evil of the Nazi. It also show the despair of those people. The leading role, I mean the heroine, is one of typist of Hitler. In the move, when The Soviets attack the Berlin. Some one give up hope, and become hard-drinking, smoking and dissipated. Some Nazis sill let Germany people to die for some stupid reason. And Hitler still believe 「if Steiner attacks, everything will be all right.」But Steiner do not come, and Hitler commits suicide at last. The heroine was released without charge, because she is the young follower of Hitler and just work as a typist. But at last she still pleading for mercy when she was an old lady.
I am glad that the director do not like others regard Hitler as a total demon or a foolish man like the famous movie The Great Dictator . We can see that in this movie, though Hitler is crazy, he still a common person at least has some feature of normal person. He may angry, may be gratified, may despair. And most of the follower of him are all normal person except the fanaticism. They are the common soldier, typist and office. They have nothing except the overheated nationalists different from us. It broken the view that they were inherent bad gay. May be they just lost themselves in the world war two.
In this movie, the crazy of Nazi were also shown without cutting down. just like Hitler still think that he can win the war and despite the fact that he has lost the war. what’s more, some one like Geobbels and his wife thinks that they couldn』t live without Nazis. But the despair is more clear than the fanaticism. When a missile come into blockhouse when they were holding a party. They all fanned out with silence. And at the last 12 day most of them began to drank and smoke. Lots of people commit suicide. what’s more, the director make some great contrast between officer of Nazi. When they found they lost the war. Some of them lost their base line and let their people die without any sense. And some of them still think that the civilian is innocent, they couldn』t be involve in the war. The two doctor in the movie Left a deep impression on me because he can』t change anything but still try his best to cure his patient. However the only thing he can do is just cut the injured limbs of soldier. If they have medicine, may be they could spare.
I do not want to talk a lot of minutiae. The minutiae touch me a lot. we can see that when duty, reality and fanaticism clashed which one they chose made great difference. No word said that war is painful. But we can sense that in all movie. Germany lead this war but their people also the victims of the war. At last of movie the heroine when she was 80 years old said that 「youth is not excuse」.
